How To Put Up An Annex On A Caravan

At Xtend Outdoors, we understand that setting up an annexe for the first time can be tricky and not exactly a speedy process. Check out below a few expert tips to make setting up your annexe easier.

What is an Annex?

An annex is an additional structure attached to a caravan or RV, providing extra living space and versatility during camping or travel adventures. Made of durable materials such as canvas or polyester, annexes come in various sizes and designs to accommodate different caravan models and user preferences.

Why You Need an Annex

Extra Living Space: One of the primary reasons for annexe installation on your caravan is to considerably improve living space. Whether you're travelling with family or friends, having an annex caravan wall provides a designated area for dining, relaxing, or sleeping, making your camping experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

Privacy and Comfort: With the option to add side walls, end walls and doors, annexes provide increased privacy compared to open camping setups. This is particularly beneficial when camping in crowded campgrounds or areas with limited space between campsites. Annex walls also help to block out noise and create a more intimate atmosphere.

Enhanced Camping Experience: Overall, having an annex enhances your camping experience by expanding your living space, improving comfort and convenience, and allowing you to make the most of your time outdoors.

Putting Up an Annexe

Putting up an annex on a caravan can vary slightly depending on the specific design of the annex and the caravan. However, here is a step by step guide through the tricky process:

Choose a Suitable Location

Select a level area where you want to set up your annex. Ensure the ground is free from debris and obstacles.

Prepare the Caravan

Park your caravan in the desired position and ensure it is securely stabilised using levelling jacks or stabiliser legs.

Unpack the Annex

Lay out the annex fabric and poles in the vicinity of your caravan. Identify the different components of the annex, including the frame poles, guy ropes, and pegs.

Assemble the Frame

Typically, annexes come with a frame made of poles that need to be connected to form the structure. Follow the instructions provided with your annex to assemble the frame. This usually involves connecting the poles using the provided connectors or inserting them into sleeves in the annex fabric.

Attach the Annex to the Caravan

Most annexes are designed to attach directly to the caravan. Locate the annex rail or attachment points on your caravan. Slide the annex fabric into the rail or attach it securely using straps or other fasteners provided.

Secure the Annex

Once the annex is attached to the caravan, secure it further by pegging down the corners and edges using the provided pegs and guy ropes. Ensure the annex is taut but not overly stretched to prevent damage.

Adjust and Fine-tune

After setting up the annex, adjust the tension of the guy ropes and make any necessary adjustments to ensure the annex is properly aligned and stable.

Check for Stability

Walk around the annex and caravan to ensure everything is securely in place. Make any additional adjustments as needed.

Accessorise (Optional)

Depending on your preferences and the features of your annex, you may want to add additional accessories such as flooring, anti flap kit, walls, or awnings to enhance comfort and functionality.

Always refer to the specific instructions provided with your annex for detailed guidance tailored to your particular model. Proper setup and maintenance of your annex will ensure many years of enjoyment and convenience during your outdoor adventures.

Expert Tips for Annexe Attachment

Preparation and Practice: Familiarise yourself with the setup process before your trip by practising in advance. This will save time and frustration at the campsite. Pay attention to how the annex attaches to the caravan's roof mounted sail track or attachment points for efficient setup.

Utilise Tensioning Systems: Take advantage of built-in tensioning systems to keep the caravan annexe fabric taut and stable, especially in windy conditions. Adjust straps or ropes connected to the annex frame and anchored to the ground with pegs for optimal stability.

Consider Weather and Terrain: Choose a sheltered location with good drainage, and use additional guy ropes or storm straps if windy. On uneven ground, use levelling blocks to ensure stability and a level surface for the annex.

Following these tips, along with utilising sail tracks for attachment, will streamline your annex setup process and ensure a comfortable camping experience.
